- <p> DIED. ORVAL FAUBUS, 84, former six-term Governor of Arkansas
- who defied a 1957 federal order to desegregate Little Rock's
- public schools; in Conway, Arkansas. The Little Rock crisis
- bloomed when Faubus dispatched the Arkansas National Guard to
- prevent nine black students from entering Central High School.
- A federal judge ordered Faubus to stop interfering--an edict
- that was finally enforced by federal troops. Faubus would remain
- Governor until 1967; in later years he pursued a number of careers,
- including work as a bank teller.
